The grafting of walnut in the ground is quite tricky and many experts consider not the same in Switzerland. Several years of testing and experience of walnut grafting have resulted with different techniques. However, the plating on the eye pushing in June gave the most conclusive results. When the conditions were good, the success rate was 70%. Four factors are critical to success: good timing of grafting in June, plates freshly taken from the previous year shoots, moist microclimate under the plastic strip and scaled size of the rootstock.
