摘要

This paper presents experimental research into joining aluminum alloys using friction stir spot welding. The goal of the experimental tests was to obtain Information about failure mechanism of a friction stir spot welded overlap joint that is subject to shear load. The ratio of welded joint strength to base material strength was analyzed. The joints were created using friction stir spot welding (FSSW), and refill friction stir spot welding (RFSSW), technologies. The application of the modified tool to RFSSW changes the mechanism of weld crea-tion. The RFSSW weld is characterized by symmetrical joint that is free from areas of lower density and occu-rrence of asymmetrical joining line (retreating thinning). The joint failure occurs in base material and corre-sponds to the strength of base material. The appropriate design of weld distribution allows for obtaining full load capacity and replacing currently applied resistance spot welding and riveting technologies.
