Despite two years at university, a year of professional exams and two further years of articles, the prospect of a career in law never held much appeal to Sean Millen In between studies, he had travelled and sampled courses in sculpture and life drawing, but nothing seemed to offer a sound alternative. By the time he found himself engaged in his second year post articles, panic had set in. In desperation Miller joined a pottery evening class in Camden, and to his utter delight he began to see a way out. While travelling on his motorbike in France, he had come across pots being sold in markets, which he had been attracted to and bought, but it had not occurred to him to do anything further about it. Now at last, he was able to see the whole process of pottery making, a skill that was direct as well as useful, producing items that you could sell, and from his very first class in ceramics, he was hooked. In 1987 Miller was fortunate to get a place on the Studio Ceramics Course at Harrow (now University of Westminster) and to persuade the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA), just before its abolition, to award him a discretionary grant. His escape plans were laid.
