An estimate of alpha-Cr crystal lattice defects after mechanical treatment of a chromium-carbon mixture in a centrifugal planetary mill is given. The time of mechanical activation was from 12 to 43 min, the hall mass-to-material mass ratio was 20:1. An improved method of analyzing diffraction-line broadening was used. The method assumes that the domain profile with respect to steepness occupies an intermediate value between the Cauchy and Gaussian functions and can be approximated by their convolution and also that chaotic microstrain of a separate interplanar spacing epsilon_1 occurs in addition to uniform root-mean-square microstrain epsilon. It was found that with increasing time of mechanical activation of the Cr-C mixture both linear dimensions of the domain (_(vol), _(area)) decrease, whereas both microstrains increase. The fact of dominance of chaotic microstrain is noted.
