As a ceramist I have always been fascinated by the interplay between sculptural form and painterly surface. I love colour in general and the richness, depth, and texture of ceramic colour in particular, and combined with three-dimensional form it has the added interest of light and shade. I started making one-off sculptural wall pieces about fifteen years ago, in tandem with my freestanding ceramic pieces. My new work, collectively titled Flow2, has developed from there into large-scale, site-specific panels that respond to their architectural setting. A 'scaled up' version of my ceramic sculptures, they are made up of individual three-dimensional 'tiles' that can be combined in different configurations and on different scales to create bespoke installations and contemporary art pieces. I see them as 'in situ art', a modern take on the long traditions of architectural ceramics that retain their own artistic integrity.
