From the first day of learning ceramics, my interest was in turning pots on the wheel. Handbuilding was taught as a necessary process but I never spent time developing the skills. There was such an irresistible urge to sit at the wheel and feel the clay as it turned into a pot, with a shape and dimension in mind. Pottery has been my hobby for twenty years. At various studios I have learnt different aspects - the shapes, the types of clay, decoration techniques, different ways of firing, etc. One summer a teacher offered a short course in lamination techniques. I joined, not knowing quite what to expect The course started with mixing colour stains into clay, cutting them into slices and re-stacking into two- or three-colour blocks. Using templates we cut out layers to make simple handbuilt plates and bowls.
