It is a remarkable time for ceramists, both in and out of the sale rooms. Building on what has been happening over the past few years, we are seeing ceramics emerge from the shadow of artistic work in other mediums. Alongside figures such as Lucie Rie and Hans Coper, a second generation of ceramic artists, including Ewen Henderson, Alison Britton and Elizabeth Fritsch, are now well-established names in British auction houses and museums. These are the artists working in clay who shook the norms associated with traditional craft, with hand-built, asymmetric, animated forms and interesting glazes. Then there is the effect felt by current happenings.
