It is a familiar story in the history of art for great artists to begin their careers with detailed studies of 'the masters' - a process that often involved careful copying, and research into their technical methods. Once this stage was passed the same artists often used their new skills to create entirely individual works - often quite different in style and broader in spirit, but with many aspects of their early studies absorbed into their new creations.
