摘要

Scottish based artist Stephen Bird is widely recognized for his paintings and woodcarvings which have been exhibited throughout the UK and Europe. After receiving some technical training at a FE college Bird started to produce a body of work in ceramic. His naive style brought him to the attention of the London gallery England and Co. which specialises in European Outsider Art' and last year presented an exhibition of his ceramics.Definitions of what constitutes outsider art are fiercely contested and defended. However as a practice, pottery's historical traditions are inextricably bound up with those of Folk' or vernacular art. Perversely, folk practice is no longer seen as being outside the industry but outside the ubiquitous academic studio practice.
