Like Fernando Casasempere's earlier exhibition of sculptural ceramics, which alluded to the body without being specific, his recent show is equally ambiguous in its range of references. Now there are suggestions of shadows, allusions to the body, beetles, and references to jugs and bowls - and some do have inner spaces, which, technically, constitutes a container - adding to the intriguing possibilities of what the work is 'about'. Yet any straightforward reading as vessel would be to miss the strength and potential of the work. Casasempere is involved with rock-like, high-fired forms; walls are thick, surfaces textured either by scoring or covering with a mottled matt glaze in dark greys or browns, adding to the sense of sculpture rather than pot. Shape and surface are intimately combined, further emphasising the totality of the form.
