摘要

This is the first time that the work of Paul Scott has been brought together in one venue and the show tracks the development of his printed ceramics from the early 'collaged' bowls through to his most recent work, which explores new ways of depicting form. It illustrates not only the work of one of the major forces in contemporary ceramics but more importantly it provides a welcome retrospective overview. Scott is a maker who, more than any single individual, has rediscovered the potential of the printed image on clay. This exhibition explores the unique position of domestic clay objects to convey social and political messages. At first glance it is made up of everyday objects - predominantly white ware, toilets, plates and teapots -reminiscent of a Staffordshire historical collection. On closer inspection the work, although historical in style, is interspersed with contemporary pieces from Tullie House's permanent collection. Scott comments on political issues, which range from international concerns such as Israel's treatment of the Palestinians, to more local issues such as Cumbria's recent outbreak of Foot and Mouth and the ever present threat presented by the Sellafield reprocessing plant.
