My Helicoid forms developed through research into complexity and chaos, and theories relating to growth in nature. The concept of 'self similarity at different scales' and repeated patterns that can create shape and form led to experimenting with iterating formulae that can be simplified and visualised as slight geometrical changes like frames in an animation. Take a basic shape, draw around it, and call it Layer One. Then enlarge it by ten percent and rotate five degrees. Copy the result 5mm away from the original, repeat, and so on. I used this method to create 3D computer models of my initial ideas, which allowed me to repeat and automate these steps. These transformations allow me to include a starting and end point. I now also use CNC devices (Computer Numeric Control) and Rapid Prototyping.
