After reading the excellent book Janet Leach: A Potter's Life by Emmanuel Cooper, I was reminded of meeting her mother in Texas. Mrs Darnell was then a resident in a Methodist retirement home in Georgetown, Texas, where I lived. A neighbour, a part-time volunteer at the home, mentioned a lady there who said her daughter was a potter who had married a famous British potter. At the time, early 1980s, I was teaching pottery classes in a community education programme and was using pictures of Janet Leach's pots as an example of intuitive design. I did not recognise the name Darnell, but fold my neighbour that the only potter who fitted that description was Janet Leach. A little research soon revealed that it was Janet Darnell Leach.
