Coal is the main fuel for power generation in many countries of the world. The proportion of electric power from coal-fired power plants is as high as 52 percent in the US, a country with the most liberal market economy; 54 percent in Germany, where market economy is socially oriented; and 72 percent in China, a country with transitional economy. The latest US long-term energy forecast, published in December 2005, predicts further increase in power generation at coal-fired power plants up to 57-60 percent in 2030.
