Next-generation EAFs are a serious factor of the innovative renewal of steelmaking. A 180-t EAF with a 150-MV A transformer and an annual output of up to 2 million tons in one unit at MMK demonstrates the engineering advantages of steelmaking EAFs. Steel-making in EAFs has virtually reached the limits of its energy-technology possibilities, namely, an annual output of up to 2.4 million tons per furnace, charge melting for 22-24 min, and a power of up to 200 MW introduced at a secondary-voltage step of up to 1600 V. Under strong conditions of competition, the international manufacturers of metallurgical equipment increase their innovative activity and move toward accelerated modernization of their production by obtaining and using knowledge and experience. The fraction of knowledge is increasing and the fraction of hardware decreasing in the cost of next-generation electrometallurgical equipment. The advanced engineering solutions of the manufacturers of metallurgical equipment will significantly affect the development of steelmaking in Russia and abroad. To make investment decisions regarding the modernization of steelmaking, it is necessary to use the experience of high-quality experts in the field of electrometallurgy.
