With a material as malleable as clay, texture can provide inspiration for many new ideas. My current work developed from playing with a metal triangular tool I found in a kitchen shop - with a different sized zigzag on each edge. I already had a builder's metal float, conventionally used to apply tile adhesive to a wall, and I found several more of these in various shapes and sizes in France. In the past I have made texture boards using strips of wood, textured plaster boards, rolling pins out of dishwasher waste pipe or vacuum cleaner tube, modified modelling tools, perforated metal sheet and pegboard; using virtually anything in my workshop to add interest.
