Ian Gregory's new book challenges the preconceptions of what we have always, by tradition, understood a kiln to be and awakens the realisation that a kiln need not necessarily provide a function or produce a product. A kiln may exist only to create theatre, to enthral and captivate an audience. A kiln may also be the end product in itself - the art is the kiln - the fired structure becomes the finished piece. As Gregory says himself: 'Over the past 20 years, firing events have challenged the ideas of the kiln's function. They present the kiln as a time-based artwork where process is emphasised rather than a product. A rapidly growing area of international interest, the "performance kiln" is expanding the limits of ceramic possibility'.
