In a fireclay and calcine production process, an alternative fuel unit is coupled with the production unit so that the active firing zone is utilized as the post-combustion zone for the waste gases from the alternative fuel unit. In a fireclay and calcine production process as described above, alternative fuel unit (second rotary kiln) hot gases are fed at 850-950 deg C into the top of the is coupled with the production unit (first rotary kiln) and are heated by the installed natural gas burners to above 1200 deg C for more than 2 sec. to achieve the requisite gas temperature for the firing operation.
