The market town of Settle is a well known tourist centre in the Yorkshire Dales. But for Spiral owners Margaret Uttley the souvenir sheep pastorals which pass for regional art have been thankfully disregarded in favour of a thoroughly modern mix of arts and crafts, with both of equal prominence. Here Moriuchi fits well. This is a land shaped by the Ice Age, a realm of bleak, treeless moors, deep limestone gorges and rock formations, watercourses and caves, sandstone and grit. Nowhere better exemplifies time and erosion. Moriuchi's ceramics parallel the topography: 'time contained in stones', as she describes her fascination.
