A Convenient Route to 9,10-Dicyano-l,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydrophenanthrene

Aiming to synthesize tetrasubstituted phthalo-cyanines,we attempted to prepare 9,10-dicyano-l,2,-3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydrophenanthrene,a representativeof symmetrically substituted phthalodinitriles.Syn-thesis of such phthalodinitriles by traditional methodsis very difficult.However,using our previously developed approaches [1],we succeessfully prepared the target compound by the following scheme.
