In 2005, after a number of intense years working as a public artist and senior lecturer, I received a Small Project Grant from the Welsh Arts Council to work for three months at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana, US, as the Myhre Scholar. This was the single most influential event in my life, and enabled me to create my seminal artworks Shadow Stack and Fossil Pit in the Sculpture Park at the Archie Bray. It was the site of an historic brick factory and already contained some of the narrative of my work to date: my passionate association with the historical and social issues relating to the brick industry.
