It is less than six years since Kristen Godfrey graduated (Wolverhampton; 3D Design) but her work shows an established maturity. Through miniature 'flask' forms to freestanding chimney sculptures runs a firm ceramic identity, almost dateless in style, simple and strong. Each piece is thrown stoneware painted with porcelain slip then overlaid with glaze bands of different colours and thicknesses, all cleverly balanced. Her chosen palette is softly organic: grey-green, russet, lemon, a thin, sharp line of chocolate brown and a glossy celadon. There is a healthy variety of form, united by a distinctly scientific bent: jars like laboratory beakers with inverted cone bases and straight stems, and flask-like vase forms - tubular thrown stoneware - which close in at an angle, Yakult yoghurt drink style. Added to these refreshingly 'masculine' shapes are the small imprints of letters and numerals, surely a play on the serial numbers of industrial and engineering parts.
