Jingdezhen, with its outstanding ceramic culture, was one of the first cities (along with 23 others) listed as a famous historical and cultural city by the State Council of China in 1982. It is unique in the world in that it has been supported by only one industry for more than 1000 years. But today, those who make the pilgrimage to the "Ceramic Capital" may be disappointed that the history they have read in books and the ceramic pieces appreciated in museums around the world can be hard to find in the physical city.
