This paper examines the contact between cutting tool flank and machined surface, which to a significant extent determines initial and operating parameters (wear resistance, fatigue strength, surface finish, residual stresses, etc.). The research was an extension of N. N. Zorev's work, making use of new solution methods for contact problems and of contemporary concepts in friction science. New data have been obtained on the processes taking place during metal cutting, which make it possible to resolve some theoretical and applied issues in machine building.
