Home Comforts

摘要

There are two strands to my present work-making pots and decorating tiles. Here I trace how these interests have developed, including a recent collaboration with an industrial tile company. My pleasure in working with clay started at a very young age when my mother, who made pots, gave me clay to play with. I enjoyed making things and the praise that my wired creations inspired. A seed was sown which lay dormant for a long time. Years later, after studying literature at university and starting on a teaching career, I went to Japan to teach English. Whilst there, a friend took me to an exhibition of pots by Shoji Hamada. The simple forms and playful ease of the decoration reminded me of the fun I had as a child with clay. Inspired, I began taking lessons.
