A graduate from the Royal College of Art, Bennett has been making ceramics in the UK for the past thirty or so years, but since the mid-1980s has mainly shown with Garth Clark Gallery in New York. Bennett's interest in cartoon and caricature almost led to a career in graphics or illustration, but the sensual, plastic quality of clay prevailed and it is this integration of two-and three-dimensional elements that gives his work its tension and style. It also makes it hard to categorise, if this is a requirement, but the containment of energetic cultural comment within the restrained brilliance of his modelling technique offers a formal experience to challenge and intrigue, surely the business of any contemporary artist.
