The eighteenth-century grandeur of Bath's Holburne Museum created a stunning backdrop to the Subversive Ceramics Symposium held in the picture gallery under the watchful eye of Gainsborough's Byam Family (cl762). The museum houses a rich historical collection of ceramics, and the ballroom's four-metre long banqueting table has been temporarily invaded by Bouke De Vries' strangely fascinating, apocalyptic installation, War and Pieces; a confection of porcelain, sugar, and plastic, and the impetus for the day's event.
