There are plenty of general ceramic books on the market and at first glance The Ceramics Design Course only adds another title to this list. However a closer inspection reveals a more focused approach to the subject. The book is part of Thames & Hudson's course book series and so nails its colours firmly to the mast as an educational resource. The book, which is richly illustrated throughout, is divided into four main chapters: The Design Process, Practical Considerations, Processes and Creative Concepts. The first three chapters are structured like a step-by-step guide to acquiring the basic skills and knowledge of establishing a design methodology. Some of the most useful sections of the book are to be found here: the way to gather inspiration, creation of mood boards, methods of sketching, how to develop ideas through maquettes and ways of organising a good portfolio. This is good basic knowledge, which it is too often taken for granted that most students will know about, but often do not. This book provides a very good resource to learn these essential skills.
