Metallurgical equipment and rolled-stock production: on the need to account for the factors influencing knife effectiveness in slitter design

We consider some examples of the design decisions relating to the designing of the knives for slitting rolled stock that may lead to increase of the metal content of the equipment, high electric power consumption by the electric driving motors, overloading of the knives in the course of their operation, nonuniform distribution of the cutting force, and in the final analysis to premature failure of the knives.Therefore, in the design and fabrication of the slitters it is necessary to take into account not only the requirements with regard to their reliability and convenience of servicing during operation, but also the conditions of the loading of the knives.
