Octobe 2008 withessed the steepest price fall in natural rubber in a single fortnight Price of RSS 4 fell by Rs. 31.50 a kg in nine trading days from Rs. 113 on October 1 to Rs. 81.50 on October 13, the quickest free fall in recent history. Sellers' resistance made the market edge up to Rs. 85 in a couple of days and the down trend has been almost arrested, though the price slid to Rs. 83.50 on October 16 and reverted on to Rs. 84 the next day. The zig-zag movement may continue in the short-term as the consuming industry is not capable of absorbing the entire peak season crop. The current slowdown in consumption growth and the continuing price fall in the world market following steep fall in the price of crude oil, suggest that the spectre of market meltdown may linger at least for a couple of months more.
