Adhesives king Henkel closes big deal 5.8 billion purchase nets two National Starch businesses

The world's largest manufacturer of adhesives is now even bigger—and more complete. Germany's Henkel KGaA in early April completed the purchase of Akzo Nobel N.V.'s adhesives and electronic materials businesses. The businesses previously were part of ICI Group's National Starch & Chemical Co. The Henkel/Akzo deal was in the works since last August as Akzo was bidding to buy ICI. Henkel's offer for the two National Starch units allowed Akzo to increase its offer to ICI shareholders, according to Alan Bate, who served as CEO of National Adhesives until leaving the company by mutual agreement at the end of April.
