One-Piece Solid Insulation for Electrical Enclosures

Power converters are used to convert direct currents (DC) into alternating currents (AC) (or reverse) for e.g. the integration of power generated by renewable power sources (e.g. wind power, solar power). Another application of converters is for the variation of frequency in order to regulate large motors with a suitable frequency. This technology leads to a more efficient energy usage for e.g. ship engines. Research activities at ABB Schweiz AG, Baden-Dattwil, focuses on technologies for solid insulation enclosure concepts for power converters in the medium voltage range (1 kV up to 40 kV).
