Japanese demand for magnesium exceeded 40,000t for the first time in three years in 2014 and demand was estimated to remain stable in 2015. Demand for magnesium in titanium refining and aluminium alloys, which account for half total consumption, was firm. The Japan Aluminium Association reports Japanese shipments of aluminium mill products fell by 1% to 1.51Mt in January to September 2015, but shipments of 5000-type alloys with high magnesium content, increased by 3% year-on-year to 330,000t. Although use of 6000-type aluminium alloys in automotive components is increasing, these alloys contain low amounts of magnesium.
