Property owners and architects are focusing on energy efficiency and "cool" roofing systems like never before. Fortunately, metal roofing can meet the requirements of customers, building codes and even the often unrealistic requirements of California's Tide 24 criteria with the help of premium metal coatings and upgraded insulation packages. On the steep-slope side of the business, metal shingles and panels, while pricier than traditional asphalt shingles, can provide impressive energy saving benefits. And with the exorbitant cost of reflective roofing granules that can nearly double the price of a cool asphalt roof, the gap between these laminated products and metal alternatives is closing rapidly. In the low-slope market in most areas of the country, the key energy-saving element to a standing-seam roof continues to be the insulation installed under the metal roofing panels.
