While it may appear as though the roofing industry is consolidating into just a few big players, the number of products and systems available is growing geometrically. Searching through a recent National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) Low-Slope Roofing Materials Guide recently indicated there were about 730 specifications listed just for low-slope roof membranes. The designer must also address requirements for wind, fire, and hail. Interior moisture conditions might necessitate vapor retarders, or at least adequate air barriers. Concerns for mold have led to a quest by some building owners for fully inorganic roof system components, but exactly what "inorganic" is, is not easily defined.
