ISRAELI CONTEMPORARY APPLIED ARTS; WINNERS OF THE ALIX ROTHSCHILD COMPETITION

The Israeli Crafts Foundation organises the AUx de Rothschild crafts competition annually. The Ben Uri Gallery in London curat-ed this show, which represented competition winners from the last five years. Although not material-specific, more than half of the exhibition was represented by ceramics. Immediately striking was the focus on land as an aesthetic, emotional and often political concern. Clay as land and buildings was clearly evoked. Much of the work expressed a preoccupation with anticipated threat, but individualised rather than structural. Dalit Taylor and Ruth Shoromi's works articulated the anxiety of the threat of violence and need for protection resulting in suffocating introspection and increasing separation. A very different narrative was expressed by Stratas of Time, a graceful evocation of drifting desert sands in vessel form.
