Bruce Chatwin, Utz (1988). Trustee's Choice, the title of the first in a series of exhibitions drawn from the Anthony Shaw Collection, might suggest anonymity or an activity done at arm's length, perhaps a lack of intimate knowledge. In fact nothing could be further from the truth. David Whiting, the trustee in question, is steeped in the history of British studio ceramics (his father was the renowned potter Geoffrey Whiting), and has written critically on the subject for almost twenty years. Many of his closest friendships are with potters and those working in clay.
