HETEROTHECA SUB AXILLARIS VAR. LA TIFOLIA (ASTERACEAE), A MASSACHUSETTS RECORD ESTABLISHED IN A CAPE COD HEATHLAND

On August 25, 2012, we found a population of Heterotheca subaxillaris (Lam.) Britton & Rusby var. latifolia (Buckley) Gandhi & R.D. Thomas growing near the summit of Bearberry Hill, a part of the Pamet area trail system within the Cape Cod National Seashore off North Pamet Road in Truro, Barnstable Co., MA. One of us (C.J.B.) has conducted research with H. subaxillaris (false golden aster, goldenaster, or camphorweed) since the early 1960s (Burk 1961; Burk and Nah 1966), and we both have been familiar with the Bearberry Hill site since 1982. However, we had not visited the area since 2004, and we assume that H. subaxillaris var. latifolia has become established there during that interval (Figure 1). On the basis of Cullina et al. (2011), we believethe population represents a Massachusetts state record and a northern range extension. It also occupies an unusual habitat for this "very weedy, morphologically variable species" (Semple 2004), which occurs more frequently in fields, road edges, waste spaces such as vacant lots, and on otherwise disturbed soils (Haines 2011).
