STATUS OF STREPTOPUS AMPLEXIFOLIUS (LILIACEAE) IN CLINTON COUNTY, NEW YORK

Streptopus amplexifolius (L.) DC. (Liliaceae) is an herbaceous perennial of rich moist coniferous and deciduous woods (Utech 2003) with a circumboreal distribution that extends, in the eastern US, as far south as the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee (Gleason and Cronquist 1991; USDA, NRCS 2012). Known commonly as white twisted-stalk and white mandarin, S. amplexifolius is uncommon and may be declining in parts of the Northeast and is listed as endangered in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and threatened in Connecticut (USDA, NRCS 2012). In Massachusetts, S. amplexifolius is on the state watch list, where it is ranked "S3?" (probably vulnerable; Cullina et al. 2011). The species is historically common in New York State and currently has an S4 ranking (apparently secure), but its presence in Clinton County, NY (the northeastern-most county of the state) has not been recorded. In-county populations of S. amplexifolius have not been observed by local botanists (K. Adams, SUNY Plattsburgh, pers. comm.) nor accessioned in the only herbarium in the county, plat (SUNY Plattsburgh). Meanwhile, records of the species for adjacent counties are established and noted by the New York Flora Atlas (Weldy and Werier 2012), a source of in-state distributionsbased on more than 100,000 vouchers held by over 75 regional herbaria.
