This Special Focus on RNA Chaperones and Helicases was inspired, in part, by the 7th International Retroviral Nucleocapsid Symposium (IRNCS) held in Minneapolis, Minnesota in September 2009 (co-organized by Drs. Louis Mansky, Robert J. Gorelick and Karin Musier-Forsyth). In this issue, many of the presenters from the 7th IRNCS have prepared reviews in their areas of expertise and therefore, one of the focuses of the issue is on retroviral and retrotransposon chaperone proteins. In addition, several non-retroviral chaperone proteins are also reviewed. Also presented are general overviews of RNA folding by chaperones and helicases both in vitro and in vivo. This combination provides a rather comprehensive coverage of the RNA chaperone field, and draws comparisons between retroviral and non-retroviral remodeling proteins in the context of current views on RNA folding.
