My early career in the fine art auction industry had focused on 20th century design. In 2004 I joined the Contemporary Ceramics department at Bonhams and the volume and variety of works that I came to handle set me on an extraordinary learning trajectory. I felt an affinity for ceramics and came to love discovering new pieces that would intrigue and excite. Sometimes it was down to the purity and simplicity of a form; at others the hidden depths of a glaze that changed in different lights and so seemed like new time and again; then there would be the discovery of a piece that at first sight is so difficult to understand, it keeps you coming back to re-evaluate.
