Harmondsworth Great Barn is an astonishing survival, a vast medieval barn almost under Heathrow Airport. I was asked to make clay tiles to re-roof it. It is an odd place to find one of the most important medieval barns in the country. It is the largest wood-framed building in England. Thirteen massive oak trusses hold up its roof, yet it is made entirely without nails; its interior, an outstanding example of medieval carpentry, is one of the most intact and original of its age anywhere in Europe. Sir John Betjeman called it the 'Cathedral of Middlesex'. And it is within a stone's throw of Heathrow Airport.
