A POTTER'S IMPRESSION Ursula Morley Price

If was in 1964 after visiting Bernard Leach's pottery that I decided to work in clay as well as continuing to paint. Three years later in 1967 I was invited to take part in a mixed exhibition where I first encountered the work of Hans Coper. I remember picking up Hans's work and when looking at it felt I was looking into the soul of its maker. This encounter made a deep impression on me. In 1973 I moved with my husband Peter and our three small children to south-west France, setting up a home and studio in a derelict hamlet. Peter built a 50 cu.ft oil-fired kiln and within six months I was selling and exhibiting my work back in the UK at Kettles Yard along with Lucie Rie, Hans Coper, Mary Rogers, Colin Pearson and others. Henry Rothschild, who put on the exhibition, also sent my work to galleries and museums in Germany. I also sold my work at that time to Peter Dingley Gallery in Stratford-upon-Avon. It was here that William Hall of Pennsylvania State Museum of Art purchased my work for the Urban Potters exhibition. This exhibition eventually went to Everson Museum of Art and finally to Graham Gallery (both in New York).
