At last year's Rochester Mineralogical Symposium there was a lot of discussion concerning mineral groups. Most of this stemmed from the decision to omit the Mineral Group section from the ninth edition of Fleischer's Glossary of Mineral Species. I took these discussions very seriously and decided to do something about mineral groups. First, for those who didn't read the preface to the "Fleischer" the reason for not including the Mineral Groups section was the greatly increased size of the main section and the estimate that the new Mineral Groups section would require about another one hundred pages. A Fleischer of more than four hundred pages would be difficult to handle.
