West Texas Agate/Collecting on Woodward Ranch and Ritchie Ranch

When you do a Google search, be sure to also select Images, as there are lots of great and inspiring photos on the Web from many collectors. You can also search for "Woodward Ranch agate" on YouTube (www.youtube.com) and find videos that people have posted about collecting agate at the ranch. After visiting www.woodwardranch.net, I called and made arrangements to visit in mid-February. It seemed that the owners welcomed visitors and even had a rock shop and campground for visiting rock-hounds. On the drive back from Tucson, I headed south on state Route 118 from Alpine, Texas. After just a few miles, I traveled over a mountain pass of about 7,000 feet and stopped at a scenic overlook, from which I saw Sul Ross University in the distance. Resuming the drive, I found the ranch 18 miles south of Alpine. After taking a right turn at the ranch sign onto Calamity Creek Road, it was only a short distance to the ranch headquarters.
