Farewell to the Father of Rock & Gem

This strikes me as the best place to express my feelings over the loss of Jim Miller, owner of Rock & Gem, who passed away just after Thanksgiving 2003. It seems very appropriate that I should share my thoughts about Jim, since he was not only the guiding light of this magazine, but played a major role in my emergence as a writer. While Jim was the man I worked for, he was much more than that. He was also a genuinely good friend. Peter Zodac, founder of Rocks and Minerals, encouraged me to begin writing over 45 years ago, but Jim played are equally significant part, as he inspired me while encouraging me to extend myself in my writings. It happened the day we met.
