Some 70 million years ago, catastrophic crustal events on the Earth's surface brought the huge creatures that roamed the planet to their knees. This may not have been the event that brought them to extinction, but it definitely had an impact on their lives. This event was so devastating that the Earth ripped and wrinkled as two continental plates-the Pacific Plate to the west and the North American Plate to the east-ground together. New mountains and valleys were formed, and living things were buried under mountains of lava and ash. Forests of mighty redwoods trembled and fell in the path of hot lava, gas and ash. As life on this planet changed forever for some species, new possibilities began for other forms of life, and even in death new things were brought to life. A change began in the huge trees now buried under the foreboding new landscape.
