POTTERY IS ONE OF THE ANCIENT CRAFTS IN NIGERIA THAT IS STILL BEING practiced in most parts of the country today. They are modelled, dried and fired with glaze embellishment on their surfaces or left as terracotta. Alasa (2005) describes glaze as a glassy coat on a ceramic ware compounded from earthen mineral substances that, after processing, are mixed with water, thoroughly blended and coated to a biscuit ware and then subjected to intensive heat treatment in the kiln. Slip glaze is a clay slip that contains sufficient glass minerals that fuse to the surface of ceramic ware when subjected to firing and produces hard glassy finish. One of its functions is to seal the pores of the wares, thereby creating a strong bond that would not allow liquid to seep through.
