During 6 years, the effects of various organic fertilizers (cattle slurry or manure) were compared with those of mineral fertilizers on two permanent meadows in the Swiss Jura. Organic fertilization led to a level of soil fertility comparable, sometimes even slightly superior to that obtained with the mineral fertilization. The botanical composition was little influenced by the fertilization treatment, but organic fertilizers tended to favor Poa trivialis. Compared with mineral fertilizers, organic fertilizers mainly drove to a decrease of the annual dry matter yield from 0.7 to 1.0 t DM per ha on average (-10 to -15%). They also provoked a light increase of the P content of the grass. The differences between the organic fertilization treatments were altogether weak. For the most part of the observed parameters, the effects of the site, of the year or of the period of harvest (1st growth or following growth) were more marked than those of the fertilization.
