The green peach aphid (or peach-potato aphid), Myzus persicae (Sulzer), is a globally distributed, economically important pest of a wide array of field crops and ornamentals. M. persicae populations the world over exhibit high levels of resistance to most conventional organophosphorus, organochlorine, carbamate and pyrethroid chemicals. Resistance, though primarily mediated by amplified carboxylesterases, is now known is many cases to be conferred by multiple mechanisms. A commodity for which the green peach aphid is a particularly significant pest is tobacco, and the relationship of tobacco feeding aphids to those on other hosts has been a point of considerable interest. Clarification of the taxonomic status of tobacco associated. M. persicae is of value, as this organism has been an important model for under-standing the origin and spread of resistance genes, and for practical issues in resistance management.
